When you speak up for yourself and your rights this is called self-advocacy. Speaking up helps other people understand what you want and need.
Watch our video below to learn how other young people with disability speak up.
There are many times when young people with disability need to speak up to ensure their choices and rights are respected. For example, you might need to speak up when you are with your friends, at school or during an important meeting.
A good example of a time when young people with disability need to speak up is during their National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) planning meetings. Speaking up about what your goals are during your planning meeting can help you get the right supports to achieve you goals.
